Work at height is any kind of work being done at a place from which the worker may fall and get injured even though this place is at or under the ground level. Personal fall protection equipment in itself does not prevent a fall. All works at height require serious preparing and planning. The following principles shall be followed when planning such works:
- if possible any work at height shall be avoided;
- all measures shall be taken to prevent the risk of a fall (using collective and personal protection equipment);
- if the risk of a fall could not be prevented, all measures shall be taken to minimize the fall distance and consequences.
One shall make sure that all the works have been properly planned, weather conditions have been taken into account, all participants have been trained and are fit for the work, personal fall protection equipment have been checked, additional possible workplace risks have been taken into account.
When tasks performed on the roof of a building require certain concentration of the worker’s attention, he may forget he is at the edge. The tragedy can be prevented, for example, with a safety belt attached to a safe anchor point.
There are two types of personal fall protection equipment:
- fall restraint systems;
- fall arrest systems.
Safety belts or full body harnesses attached to anchors will not let workers step into the dangerous zone. One shall never use a safety belt in the situation when a fall is possible. It may result in severe back and abdominal injuries if fall occurs.
Full body harnesses attached by lanyards to anchors may be used to stop falling. The free fall distance shall not exceed 1,2 m.
